Soy Container Candles

Soy Container Candles
Q. What is a soy container candle?
A. Soy wax container candles are made from a natural product, hydrogenated soybean oil. The hydrogenation process allows the oils to solidify at room temperature.

Q. What is soy container wax?
A. Soy container wax is made from soy bean oil. Soy bean oil is extracted from soy beans that are initially cleaned, de-hulled and converted into flakes. Most soy beans used to produce soy wax are harvested from the United States throughout the Midwest part of the country.

Q. Can soy pillar candles be made with soy container wax?
A. Soy wax used to pour container candles has a lower melting point (115-125 degrees) and cannot be used to make free standing candles. Additives and other waxes may be added to the soy for pillar manufacturing.

Q. What are the characteristics of a container candle made with soy wax?
A. The wax is opaque and creamy in nature. These qualities make a beautiful finished candle. Candle dye may be added to achieve a pastel shades. Tinting to a dark shade is challenging because of the large amounts of dye required.

Q. How does a soy container candle burn?
A. Soy candles that are manufactured with the correct sized wick, should burn from edge to edge with no waxy residue left on the sides of the container. When burning, you will notice that the melted wax pool will be slightly deeper as compared to a paraffin candle. Expect a melt pool of at least 1/4″ to 1/2″ deep. The melt pool is the release point for the fragrance.

Q. Are soy container candles soot free?
A. All well-made candles that are burning appropriately should emit little to no soot. Soot comes from non-combustion at the wick. Disturbing the candle’s flame or an untrimmed wick will also cause soot.

Q. Will I be able to smell the fragrance when the candle is burning?
A. Reputable candle makers spend numerous hours testing fragrances to insure scent throw, some fragrances do well in soy and some fall short. Wax manufactures provide guidelines on the amount of fragrance a specific wax can hold and most candle makers adhere to these guidelines by adding the maximum amount of scent. Too much fragrance will result in a candle that burns improperly.

Q. Are soy container candles completely natural?
A. Soy candle made with plant based fragrance oils, dyes and natural additives would qualify, but soy candles made with synthetic fragrance oils and chemical dyes would not. Emerging on the scene are soy blend candles which contain a mix of soy and paraffin waxes.

BLUE RIBBON WINNER~Peach Almond Lattice Pie~

Peach Almond Lattice Pie From Country Living

Tip: Use a tablespoon or two of shortening in place of the equal amount of butter to achieve a flakier crust. Also, keep ingredients cold. Freeze dough ingredients for about 20 minutes for a quick chill.

Oven Temp: 400
Ingredients
4 1/4 cup(s) all-purpose flour
2 tablespoon(s) all-purpose flour
1 cup(s) sugar
2 tablespoon(s) sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon(s) nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
1/4 cup(s) vegetable shortening
1 1/4 cup(s) unsalted butter, cubed and chilled
2 tablespoon(s) unsalted butter, cubed and chilled
10 tablespoon(s) (or more if needed) cold water
8 ounce(s) almond paste
1/4 cup(s) confectioners’ sugar
3 large eggs
2 pound(s) fresh peaches, sliced into 1/2-inch wedges
2 tablespoon(s) cornstarch
3 teaspoon(s) lemon juice

Directions

Make the dough and crust: Combine 4 1/4 cups flour, 3/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl. Cut in the shortening and 1 1/4 cups butter using a pastry blender, two knives, or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add the water, a few tablespoons at a time as necessary, and mix until just combined. Gather dough into a ball, divide in half, and flatten into disks. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours or overnight. Roll 1 pastry disk on a lightly floured surface into a 1/16-inch-thick circle. Transfer to a pie plate and trim, leaving a 1/2-inch overhang. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Roll the remaining disk on a lightly floured surface into a 1/16-inch-thick circle and using a long, sharp knife cut 10 one-inch-wide strips. Cover and chill strips.

Make the filling and assemble the pie: Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Combine the almond paste, confectioners’ sugar, and remaining butter in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a metal blade and pulse until smooth. Add 2 eggs and remaining flour and pulse until well combined. Pour the almond filling into the prepared pie shell. Combine the peaches, cornstarch, 1/4 cup sugar, lemon juice, and remaining nutmeg in a large bowl. Top the almond filling with the peaches and their juices. Weave the dough strips in a crisscross pattern to form a latticework top over the filling. Trim the ends, leaving a 1/2-inch overhang. Crimp the bottom crust and the lattice together. Whisk remaining egg with 1 tablespoon of water in a small bowl. Lightly brush the pie top and edge. Sprinkle with remaining sugar. Bake on baking sheet for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 400 degrees F and bake until filling bubbles and crust is golden brown — about 45 minutes.

If you don’t have time to make this wonderful tasting pie, just light one of juicy Georgia Peach Scented Soy Candles! Our scent is fresh from the farmer’s market, sweet and juicy peaches with a little nuttiness (almond) on the side!
